Cornel, at top pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection, didn’t have the success many had hoped for during his first season. Undersized and working to fill out his frame during his rookie campaign, it didn’t help that the Petes spent much of last season playing catch up. However, displaying a willingness to work on his two way game and improve his physical play, Cornel has bounced back in a big way this season. In 49 games, Cornel scored 18 goals and 26 assist for 44 points.

Cornel plays a high temp game, utilizing his great vision and playmaking ability to provide an offensive impact. He’s got great hands and displays very good hockey IQ, making players around him better. Also, despite being a bit under-weight, Cornel uses his big frame to protect the puck and get himself into scoring areas where he can unleash a rocket of a shot.

Defense has been the biggest concern, but Cornel has the determination and ethic to round it out. A good skater to boot, he also earned himself a spot in the OHL Top Prospects Game.
