Ritchie was not always a one sport athlete. Growing up, he played both lacrosse and hockey before ultimately giving up the former to focus on the latter. However, he does look back on his lacrosse experience as a favorable one. With many parallels between the two sports, Ritchie cites lacrosse for improving his hand-eye coordination, compete level and fitness. It is apparent now that he will be following his older brother Brett’s, who is a Dallas Stars prospect, footsteps. As a matter of fact though, Nicholas may very well outdo his brother on draft day, with the potential of hearing his name called in the first round.

But it is more than bloodlines and an athletic background that has Ritchie high on draft boards. Plain and simple, the kid is big and strong. Continually hitting the gym before classes, he is already physically dominating. Effective at holding off defenders, he is hard on the forecheck and is adept at bulling his way to the front of the net. Looking to players like Rick Nash and Milan Lucic as inspiration, Ritchie seems to fit their mold of big, skilled power forwards.

On the offensive side of the puck, Ritchie is not a slouch though. While he does display effective playmaking skills, he is also noted for his natural scoring ability, thanks to a good shot and quick release.

Ritchie’s physical and offensive play are not synonymous of each other though. With great vision in his own zones, he reads play well and is effective defensively. Ritchie brings a well rounded game and plays hard in all three zones.

And while it might have been a tough decision for him to give up lacrosse, the way things are looking, he made a good decision. Coach Jody Hull has certain taken notice of his play. Stating that everything Ritchie does is done hard and done with a purpose. Clearly earning the respect of his coach, it will only be time before his name if well known on a larger scale.
