McKeown is one of the highest ranked defenseman eligible for the 2014 NHL Draft behind Aaron Ekblad. In the 2012 OHL Priority Selection Draft, only Connor McDavid (2015 eligible) was drafted higher, and rightfully so. Extremely well rounded, the Toronto Marlboro product is projected to provide shutdown value and be a solid offensive contributor at the next level. His coach, Todd Gill, has even compared McKeown to a Scott Niedermayer type of player. If he can even get close to that type of a player, he will be a special talent for whoever drafts him.

On the offensive side of the puck, McKeown’s repertoire is quite lengthy. With great vision, McKeown has strong playmaking ability and impresses with his uncanny ability to make difficult passes work out. With a good shot as well, McKeown is also a quarterback on the Frontenacs powerplay. After scoring 29 points last season, TSN’s Craig Button believe 50 points would be well within his reach.

However, the attribute that really makes him a dangerous two way player is his hockey IQ. Smart with the puck, he is also poised and positionally strong without it. Coming into the season, he made a conscious effort to add strength to his frame which has attributed to his improved defensive play. Currently, he is a plus 13, a far cry from his minus 24 from a season before. His skating ability should not be overlooked though. Blessed with good size, McKeown still has great quickness, acceleration and speed.

Displaying a level of dedication, he not only improved his speed and strength during the offseason, but he trained with NHL pros. This well rounded workhorse should continue to log a lot of minutes on the top defensive pairing in Kingston. The resume is tempting, and if all goes as well as planned, McKeown has the potential to crack the top 10 in June.
